Sultan al-Niyadi will be the first Arab astronaut to spend six months on the International Space Station (ISS).
The Sultan from the United Arab Emirates is involved in the mission, which will begin in the spring of 2023.
With this mission, the UAE will be the 11th country to launch a long-duration mission into space.
The country’s President Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan congratulated the astronaut, tweeting that the historic milestone builds on the strong foundations of the UAE’s space program.
In April this year, the UAE signed an agreement to send an astronaut to the ISS for 182 days.
Earlier, Huzza Al Mansoori was the first UAE astronaut to visit the ISS in September 2019.
